Cheers to you.....

If there is anytime during the year, we reflect, it would be the last day of the year ! I am sure we can fill pages and pages of our own personal book with life lessons.

It costs us nothing to be an influence for someone else, an inspiration or simply someone to look up to.  Everyone can benefit from a kind, generous, giving, caring and loving soul. You may be all they have.  Our lives are increasingly busy, but should always make time for things that matter.  Things that stood out can make a difference not only for us, but others as well !

Everyone's list could look very different or be similar, there really isn't right or wrong, or age specific. It really should be what was significant for you. An exercise we probably don't have time for, or one that we really don't make a habit of completing.  This might be a good time to start ? So, if you did have a blank book,  and asked what your life lessons were from 2014, what would it say ?

My year was filled with life experiences amd from each was able to take away a core lesson.
So here goes my life lessons from 2014 and on to more life learning in 2015 !

1.  Do what makes you happy

2.  Give advice only when asked

3.  Like yourself

4.  Do the things that count most for you

5.  Find something special to focus on

6.  Be open to different options

7.  Know what's going on around you

8.  Your every action impacts someone, think twice

9.  Learn from every struggle

10. Go with your intuition

11. Do what you put your mind to

12. Have no regrets

13. Find your motivation

14. Focus on what you can change

15. Everyone can make a difference, how will you

16. Be the spark

17. What is your plan

18.  Make time for you

19.  If it is important to you, then that is all that matters

20.  Don't be afraid to dream

21.  Love unconditionally

Wishing you all an exciting year ahead, happiness and success !  I am hoping you will find your inspiration and areas you want to explore.  Each day is one to appreciate and treasure.  Find the strength and energy to go through each day and it's challenges, find the secret to your happiness, and most of all, share your love.  Let those around you know why they are important and how their biggest strengths make a difference for you and others.  Last but not least - celebrate and spend time together !

Happy New Year !
Cheers to you !

Celebrating our first healers...

It was a full house at Milos restaurant, guests attended this lovely fundraising evening coordinated by the Hellenic medical association of Quebec to benefit Fellow, Resident and Medical Student Scholarships.  An excellent venue, great food, great wine, great company,  live music by Artemis & co and silent auction.  Congratulations to the many contributors that made this evening a huge success.

The evening started with a welcome by Dr. Chris Karatzios, President of the HMAQ Board of Directors. The purpose of these scholarships are to honour and award students of Hellenic origin attending institutions of higher learning in Quebec who excel in their studies (www.hellenicscholarships.org), you can refer to their website for the 2013-2014 Award Recipients.  Congratulations to all.

The evening was dedicated  to the first healers of our community and their relentless contributions.  We had the pleasure to meet and hear from the following Pioneers :

Kostas Benierakis
Garyfalia Bouchelou
Thomas Kolivakis
Nicolas Mandalenakis
Harry Stevens
Chris Vakis

I take great pride coming from hellenic origin and admired each one for their excellence and influence in our community.  They were truly role models and mentors to many and in many different ways.  You can clearly see the love and respect for each pioneer as Dr. Lila Amirali and Dr. George Tsoukas acknowledged their achievements across a lifetime. They all had the same thing in common - they started with big dreams and a big heart.  What an inspiration listening to all their accomplishments and hearing them recount their life in the medical field. It was inspirational to see how their efforts made an incredible difference through their committment, community involvement, leadership and dedication to patient care.  Each one of them shared their inspirational stories and each one had an enormous impact on many in the community.

One in particular had a  huge impact on me and that was Dr. Harry Stevens.  He was the surgeon that was taking care of my mom in the early years.  Dr. Harry Stevens was a household name and everyone knew who he was.  He was an important role model for his patients for decades. He educated his patients, kept them informed and shared advice to keep his patients healthy and happy, most of all, had the best bedside manners for his patients.

I remember fondly the doctor visits, but I also remember how fondly my mom would speak of Dr. Stevens. She had the highest regard for him.  I would say, the last time I visited his office was in the late 90's, just before he retired.  My mom passed away in 2003, and I never really saw him again until this event.

Whenever the occaision came where we were talking about doctor's in the community, Dr. Stevens was often thought of and often would remind my boys that he was grandma's doctor.  So when I heard that he was one of the healers being recognized, I was so proud and emotional all at the same time.  Proud of all his accomplishments and sad that my mom was not a part of this special evening.
What made it more special was that tonight, I was going to introduce to him my son, who is in general surgery, 2nd year residency.  My mom would have been so proud to introduce her grandson to Dr. Stevens.

So after dinner, I made my way over to Dr. Stevens and introduced myself.  Shared with him who's daughter I was, we both had tears in our eyes, (more in mine).  I shared with him how proud I was of all his accomplishments, how fondly my mom thought of him and as her doctor. What an honor it truly was to be in his company.  I had the pleasure to introduce him to my family and to
Dr. Phil Vourtzoumis. It was priceless.

We shared an unforgettable  re-connection, one that will be truly treasured.

Dr. Stevens said to me " tonight has been an incredible evening for me, but want you to know that you have really made my night,Thank You so much , you really made my night "

That night, we celebrated their exceptional medical profession, positive influence and passion for excellence in medecine.  After a full career, these physicians remain dedicated to the future of medicine and mentors for all future healers.

When Mr. John Theodosopoulos asked each medical student and resident to stand up, we were all very proud of our healers of the future. A proud moment indeed.

All it takes is big dreams and a big heart !

High school days.....9 of the most amazing takeaways !

No matter what age, we all have fond memories of our high school years.

When i think of my high school years, I think about the close relationships with my friends,

I remember all the basketball games, cosom hockey, gymnastics club, greek club, art club, music club and the student council. There was always something to do and somewhere to be. I loved it.

The ping pong matches during recess and lunch, the fashions show, the science club the outside hockey games, quebec trip.   We had so many interests and talents - there was something for everyone.

I remember our classes, classmates, the funny ones, the silly ones, the quiet ones and the goofy ones - we had all kinds of classmates that were special to each of us.

Our teachers that not only taught us academically, taught us about life.

The sock hops......waiting for that first slow dance - stairway to heaven....

The crushes,  the first loves and steady relationships.

Today after so many years, if we are a part of each others social network and lives - we are incredibly lucky that we can actually keep those close relationships. Baron Byng was a special place and everyone that was a part of it, feels a connection - we were family.

Like every young student, we had an idea of what we wanted to do after we finished high school, but did not know for sure what our dream job looked like or what major to study in. And sometimes, you have to try different areas, and that is okay. Even if we did not have it all figured out, we knew we would follow our talents and interests.

After graduation, we wondered if we will see our classmates again.  Looking at the yearbook and all our messages to one another, it reminded  us all of a time in our lives that will forever be a big part of who we are today.

It was a time to work hard, have fun, learn new things before we all go our different ways.

A time to stay on top of homework, even when sometimes we slacked, we had to get back on track quickly.

After high school - no one looks back, that is just the way it is. The great memories will always be there, never forgotten. It is a time to focus on the future, the career opportunities and our adult life.
That special high school I am referring to was Baron Byng, located at 4251 St. Urbain Street, in Montreal, Quebec, part of the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal. It was a special place, ask any Bynger and they will swear it was.

Baron Byng High School

Some facts on wikipedia about the high school to share with you - It was named after Julian Hedworth George Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy, the Governor General of Canada from 1921 to 1926. Byng was a World War I hero at the battle of Vimy Ridge, an important battle that many historians, like Pierre Berton, believe formed Canada's national character. Byng was also involved in a political scandal dealing with the succession of the Canadian Government, the King-Byng Affair in 1926.

From the 1920s through the 1950s, the school predominantly catered to Montreal's lower-income Jewish population. From the 1980s onwards, the building became the home of the non-profit community organization Sun Youth (Jeunesse au soleil).

Some of the notable members of the alumni back then included...

Mike Boone, Montreal Gazette reporter

Abie Budman, born April 24, 1937, Canadian businessman, founder of Bud Products, Ltd.

Morris Fish, Supreme Court of Canada judge

Sam Gesser, record producer and concert promoter

Louis Horlick, cardiologist and medical educator

A. M. Klein, poet

Irving Layton, poet

David Lewis, Rhodes Scholar, labour lawyer, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada 1971-75

Frederick Lowy, medical educator and president & vice-chancellor of Concordia University

Rudolph A. Marcus, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1992

Louis Nirenberg, mathematician

Simon Reisman, civil servant

Mordecai Richler, author

William Shatner, actor

Philip Seeman, schizophrenia researcher

Lorne Trottier,business owner

This was truly a great place where the staff, teachers, counselors and principal worked really hard as a team to organize student activities and foster an environment to promote participation, teamwork.
and encourage students to continue their education.

So, what happens after high school ??  here is some advice...

  • As a young student, you have your entire life ahead of you, make it count, make the right choices - this could probably be the hardest thing, but build your character, do not get influenced by others, do what is right for you

  • Never underestimate your capability and potential, you can do anything you put your mind to it - dream and dream big ! you are competent...practise lifelong learning !

  • Be an inspiration to others, your actions inspire others, even when you think no one is watching

  • Make others feel like a million dollars, make them feel special

  • Once you have made a committment - stick it out, make it work, be true to that committment

  • Find the courage to do things you never thought possible

  • Your attitude will make all the difference around you, if you're happy, others will be, if you're passionate, others will be, if you are positive, others will be - create that energy contagious to others

  • Stay connected - nurture those relationships, nothing more rewarding than to be in the same room with old friends, how many people can say that...be surrounded by people you want to be surrounded by and shared a past

  • Most important - set the example, be the example, lead by example

If you are in your last year as a senior, make it your best one,  for those that have graduated, feel free to share your most amazing takeaways....always love to hear your comments !

To all my high school friends - and you know who you are....cheers to you, cheers to great friendships,  cheers to great memories !!!!

To all high school seniors - make it count !  this is your opportunity of a lifetime !

Do you have what it takes to volunteer ??? yes you do....

At any age, you have something worthwhile to offer.  It's true.  All you need is a big heart, a helping hand and some time. Volunteerism comes in many forms - each one is special - whether

you visit seniors' homes, work with teenagers, be part of not-for-profit organization, work with  disadvantaged children, mentor young children in local schools, help a food bank, support a shelter, volunteer at a hospital or school or offer financial support. You would be supporting a community organization or charity that would be very appreciative of your efforts.  What is special is that young or old, you can put your skills to work. So, how does someone get started ? Easy - you find something you want to get involved with, get involved, share your ideas and offer your help. This exact action leads to volunteer led communities.  I have not met anyone who is not interested in being a good citizen.

I have seen first hand what type of impact a dedicated team of volunteers can have to raise money for a charitable organization.  Words cannot describe their energy, their passion and their perseverance.
Take a close look in your neighborhood and you will see all around you the valuable contributions volunteers make. I am really inspired by every single person, that pays it forward.

So, if you ask yourself...

how can I make a contribution in my community ?
what role can I play in making my community stronger ?

What comes to mind ??? For me, right away, I cannot help but think - If you are anything like a Pink in the City volunteer, you are totally engaged and involved to spark results, drive and make a whole lot of difference.

You are probably wondering  Why Pink in the City ? What makes the volunteers of Pink in the City so special ?

Aside that this charity is close to my heart - I also can validate the incredible warmth and genuine interest they bring to the team.....if i was to sum up what they do best, it would be....

  • They are the role models of the community we look up to. A team who has come together to share their experiences, knowledge, expertise and all on their own time.  They have taken a personal interest to be active in their and contribute to this wonderful cause that will benefit many.  They are an inspiration . After  I personally spend a few hours with them - I leave feeling pumped, energized and ready to climb a mountain !

  • This pink in the city team of dynamos reach out to family, friends, breast cancer survivors and community partners. Work every day to find new sponsors and help in the fight to save lives.

  • Hardly a day passes without a member working on making Pink in the city known, share our story and talk about how special it is. That is true love.

  • The most rewarding is to be able to work with our local hospital and raise funds where they can be put to good use, and be able to see for ourselves - how we can make a difference for that one patient.

  • Each member puts in a tremendous amount of time and many hours every day.- No one said it was going to be easy, but ask any member the electricity you feel in the room when everyone is together.

  • It already has started - action packed, getting ready for the big event in Spring.  The next 5 months will be critical.  All hands on deck.

  • Pink in the City works together to make this breast cancer a distant memory -  celebrate each day, our breast cancer survivors and honor those that have lost the fight.

So, if you are still wondering, how you can make a difference, young, old, single, married....it does not really matter what age group - what really matters is to get the courage and consider these options .....

  • get your children involved...encourage volunteerism, encourage them to give back, model the way ....
  • be present to celebrate May 1, 2015 and what it represents
  • everyone has been touched by this devastating disease and other types of cancer in one way or another - help raise donations through sponsors and sponsorships.
  • take an active role in increasing volunteer participation and leadership within local schools and canadian communities
  • In-kind contributions such as donations of food, the venue, or entertainment helps considerably
  • Sponsorships play a critical role in the overall income we generate to donate - be one of our sponsors
  •  event publicity, ad in our program book and company logos are all ways to display and promote your business - get visible signage day of the event
  • Silent auction/live auction - contributor/sponsor for auction items - always looking for items
  • Program Ad books - will be given to each guest attending. The ad book is made up of paid advertisements and includes information about the nonprofit. We encourage local businesses, vendors, entrepreneurs, sponsors and individual donors to support us with an advertisement, in memoriam and special messages to support our target of 125,000$
  • Become one of the participating schools to model the way and receive a Pink in the City scholarship
  • Join our events - make the connection with us and our cause, be there as our supporters and bring your network of acquaintances to introduce them to our organization
  • sign up to volunteer for our events throughout the year - contact our pink in the city organizing committee to see how you can help
  • Corporate charity programs -  become one of our partners, join our list of corporate partners
  • become an attending corporate sponsor
  • Sponsor our guest handouts
  • Community visibility - Pink in the City is available for media interviews - radio, articles, tv and any PR related methods -share our story -  contact us !

Visit Pink in the City facebook page for more details: https://www.facebook.com/PinkInTheCityCanada?ref=hl

So the next time you think you can't possibly make a contribution - think again, think about

Lawrence - at the age of 11, founding member who wanted to make a difference for someone going through breast cancer -  even if he did not know them personally - he just knew that his contribution would change someone's life....help change a few lives !

Please make sure to share your volunteer experiences and what drives you to make a difference !

Guilty of wanting it all perfect ? .......all moms do !!!!

Every young mom has to do some serious juggling to make her crazy life balanced ......what is balance again ??? it is really different for every woman, and every woman has their own advice on what works for them. I guess what's important in the end, is that you are happy with your life, with your priorities and your family. If you are like me, you really want to be involved -  in your children's life -you will be a lot happier, you will get the satisfaction you are seeking.  It's about making time for things that are important to you. It applies to all women, whether you are working moms or not, you are juggling equally !  All moms have a plan - that's just the way it works.  That plan includes running a household that will keep everyone on their toes, energized and performing at their best. Yes, you will come across many challenges, but my best years were having a successful career and raising my family. You can really make that happen and it is all possible. Remember your outlook will make all the difference. You can complain or take pleasure in the ordinary little things like car ride talks, road trip family fun, soccer nights with parents drinking coffee and watching our kids play, hockey nights in cold arenas, chit chat while getting dinner ready, A+ marks or not, these are some of the things that come to mind.  I chose to enjoy the ordinary things moms do - I will always treasure.

So as a working mom all my life - i have never known any other way - so when asked the question - can you be a good mom and have a work-life type of balance you enjoy ?  I don't have to think hard about that one. Yes, you can - absolutely - remember it is the choices we make and work with. Everything we do is important in trying to create that work-life balance.  I was extremely fortunate that the company I chose to grow up with had the same values and beliefs that were important to me, was right for me and my family - it was a good fit.

I won't lie, coordinating schedules so we can fit in everything we need to juggle can be overwhelming like karate, soccer practises, hockey practises, games, kumon, handball, scouts, homework, parent teacher interviews,  and carpools. Not including family celebrations  birthdays, holidays and the list can go on and on.  So much to plan and  probably have not included everything on this list - but gives us all a good idea that a moms life is somewhat busy and this does not include any down time or walking the dogs....yes, it can get insane, but I love it and would not change a thing.  Except maybe take a holiday monthly !!!!

So why do moms do all that they do and more ?? they do what they do because they adore their kids - they find that balance to make it all happen and make them happy - yes.....the wonder women of the world are very powerful, smart, thoughtful, passionate, compassionate, eager and simply incredible ordinary women that can be great moms, have great jobs and enjoy the best of both worlds. You can have a work-life balance ! I am no expert on the topic of work - life balance, but one thing that I always strive is to be the best mom I can be.  I will try things that work and things that don't. It is up to me to make the changes necessary that I can be happy with.  Like many moms out there, and you will agree - we want only the very best for our family life. I am sure many of you ladies out there can relate,  so here are some of the things I did as a working mom that you might find helpful and most probably are already doing :

  • Home cooked meals - a must and tried out different recipes - i took a few hours a month to plan for meals monday to thursday, menu of the day was posted in our kitchen calendar, knowing what to shop and cook for the week made it so much easier for groceries and planned home cooked meals. When you don't know what to cook, it can make it complicated and will just encourage you to just order in or pick up something ready on the way home - and if that is okay with you, then that is totally fine as well !

  • If you are working, have a good plan in place to pick up kids at daycare, school & after school programs, homework time, dinner and take them to their games and practises. Even though I was working, and my time was limited - I always made it a point to be a part of their activities and always had dinner together - we just worked around our schedules and made it work. You find the way. You will be amazed what you can accomplish when you make it a priority ....and some planning. No regrets.

  • Be available to help your kids with spelling tests, projects and down time to cuddle ! Every night, i would read a book to them - that was so precious and realized that spending time together like that was invaluable - priceless. So make this time a priority. Don't ever be too tired to read a book together !

  • Maternity leaves in the 80's was 4 months ? can you imagine ??? Spending those 4 months as a new mom and getting settled was new for me and my husband. We had to think about a good family routine when I was back at work. Again, having a good plan will really determine your long term success - my routine included feeding times, bedtime routines, introducing & preparing different baby foods, appointments, and all the hoopla that comes with a new baby. Let's not forget to coordinate play dates. A very important factor in all of this was staying positive and being happy. That can make all of the difference.

  • Make some time and do things you enjoy doing ! I always made community involvement a big part of who I am. I enjoyed learning new things and adding value to someone's board or team. I remember when I first joined the Board of Directors for Coaches of Canada - I learned so much about a variety of sports and coaching community. I was part of a team that it's main objective was to promote the professions of coaching and the value of a coach. It was no surprise the valuable role coaches play and their involvement with athletes dedicated to advance their sport performance in the olympics. You need to come out of your comfort zone and get involved in areas that will teach you new things and expose you to new possibilities. It is also important to truly do things that will make you happy - whatever that is.

  • Invite your children's friends over, be the hangout place, it's okay to pick up after everyone, feed them and play with them -  given them chores that come with all this fun - these are the best times.....when they are all grown up, you will not only have fond memories, but you will be admiring them.  Get to know your son's or daughter's little friends. Moms always like to know everyone and everything about them !

What do you do to achieve work-life balance ??? pls share, we can all learn from each other.  I would love for you to share your experiences , tips or advice !!!

We remember...

Every year, we are reminded of those brave souls who lost their life fighting. And every year when I spot the first poppy, I cannot help but be reminded of what an inspiration they were to us and continue to be.

Every picture, every activity, every rememberance day image is a celebration of their life and their contributions.

As a young girl scout, I remember participating at rememberance day memorials, and remember fondly the poems and drawings we hang in our class, and all the activities that were planned each year to honor our heroes. Everyone wore their poppies and remembered. To this day,  I am inspired by these individuals who sacrificed their lives.  We are reminded on November 11 to pay tribute to them for all that they did for their country.

Although there was no book written on what they had to do, they knew in their hearts what they had to do....so when I see that poppy, I am reminded over and over of what they stood for and how much of an inspiration they were and continue to be to all of us. They were and always be remembered for.....

  • rising above and taking action for what they believed

  • living by their values

  • caring and acting with compassion

  • sacrificing their life

  • inspiring others

So today we remember all our heroes with great honor. We thank them for their actions,  and we are proud. Should you be lucky enough to know of a veteran that is still with us - make the time to sit and talk with them. It will be an unforgettable experience for them to share their story and a greater experience for you  - you will be inspired ! !  On this day, we remember.  Wear your poppy proudly, lest we forget....

How to make the most of family traditions !

Family and traditions has always been a a top priority for me and go hand in hand. Traditions my children can appreciate for years to come. Although I am sure every month signifies something for each of us, October is a month that we can all appreciate.  October is breast cancer awareness month, domestic violence awareness, national apple month, my son and daughter in law's birthdays, thanksgiving and halloween to name a few. Each have a place in my heart and deserve their own post. This one will be dedicated to thanksgiving and the importance of traditions !

I look back many years ago to that one time that started this thanksgiving tradition for me. Who would have known that sharing a wonderful thanksgiving weekend, I would then start my own traditional dinners for years to come.

Growing up in a greek family, it was not common to celebrate canadian thanksgiving. So for me, this was completely new and exciting, one thing that I knew for sure was that I wanted to celebrate every year and for many years to come. So when the time came and spent the thanksgiving weekend in Ottawa 1982 with friends, I was thrilled.. For the first time, I was going to have turkey with stuffing, This was going to be the perfect time I thought to learn how to make it. I was engaged to be married at the time and thought this could not have taken place at a better time - I had never made turkey, let alone stuff it.
So this was going to be interesting !

I spent the day in the kitchen.....bright and early....observing our hostess, asking her questions, noting all the ingredients and the step by step instructions.  I was thinking to myself, how on earth am I ever going to pull this turkey dinner off on my own when the time comes. I decided I would worry about that at a later time....after all, how complicated can that be ?  Well our hostess made it seem easy.  For years following that day....I am happy to report.....I followed my recipe notes word for word.....and I won't lie, my first turkey - I was so nervous.....but with each year, the task seemed less and less complicated.  I guess after the first 15 years, I finally stopped looking at the notes ! haha...It has now been more than 30 years.....wow...imagine, I can now feel comfortable with this turkey stuffing business !

So - Thanksgiving means many things to many people......to me, spending time with family and friends that are considered to be like family has probably got to be one of the most important priorities.

As a mom and looking back - I would not change a thing. In our complex and busy lives we can easily lose sight of our priorities...I have always felt that cherishing special times and milestones would create fun and lasting memories for everyone. Ones that we can repeat year after year and look back on. Young families can have so much fun with creating new traditions and should be on the top of the list.

What's important is to make a special effort and even though we are sometimes tired, or not up to it - spending time with those we choose to is special..... Don't let your work committments take over and dictate how to spend your holiday, instead - take time out, make turkey and the biggest question should be.........turkey....with or without stuffing ???

As the years went by....hosting and planning the traditional thanksgiving dinner became a priority for me. It was equally important  to take the time and teach my boys the value of gratitude and gratefulness. The importance to be grateful for what we have in life and not take anything for granted.

As the boys were getting older, they were a big part of this holiday preparation. It became one of our  traditions they looked forward to. What I realized is that celebrating thanksgiving with children is just awesome and the bond that you create sharing this holiday priceless,   It may seem like it is not much, but trust me, you will have so many nice memories. I remember fondly getting them to help with the stuffing, they would scoop out the chestnuts after they were cooked - I would give them a bowl and they would help me out. They just loved to be involved.  We would decorate the house with an autumn theme, go out and pick pumpkins,  decorate the table & pick fall flowers.  Play in the leaves  with the dogs and just simply enjoyed every minute. We would take long walks while the turkey was cooking.  It is so beautiful this time of year with the different colours. A time to appreciate.

Aside from making this delicious turkey dinner with stuffing, thanksgiving was all about bringing people together to share a lovely meal in each other's company. There is no greater appreciation than being with your loved one's around the dinner table.  We have shared so many laughs and til this day this is what you take away, the good times, the stories, the memories........

So, if there was any advice I can share....it would be this.....

Bring your favorite people together all in the same room

cook up a storm  and cook some more - and share

get the kids  and everyone involved in the food prep

Be grateful that we can all be together...we should never take that for granted

no matter how tired we are.....just go for it......it's a feel good thing

have fun decorating your table and house

be grateful to share special moments

be grateful for all of the good things done by others

be grateful to those that have been there for you

appreciate one another for the best they bring out in you

pay it forward....do a good deed....one that will make you feel great

take lots of pictures....and  make sure to take a family turkey dinner picture every time

share your traditions with others

share your recipe

create the tradition, the memories, and the stories

Special people in a room....

Ever come across someone that is really special and you are just drawn to them ??
What makes them special, what is it about them that you just want to get to know more about ?

For starters, when you do come across someone you value and appreciate, let them know how you feel about them - letting them know not only makes them feel great about themselves, it has a wonderful effect if it is sincere.  Compliments are a great way to motivate people and quite honestly, everyone loves to receive one.  You can really make someone feel special with words...and you should at every opportunity !

So when you are connecting with people, what qualities stand out for you ? what influences you and what qualities do you consider to be of interest ??
I am sure for all of us, different things draw us to different people, and that is quite alright....then you think some more and realize.....well if I am looking for these things in other people....am I also exercising the same special qualities ???  I am sure you are and you just don't know it......so here are my favorite ones that just inspire the life out of me........(i am hoping just about now - you are thinking about your list as well ).....enjoy !

1.  Genuine and sincere

When I am in someone's company, you really get a sense of their personality, how do they react to your needs, feelings and interests ??  There is nothing more sincere then showing genuine concern and you get that right from the get go from indivduals - if it is truly genuine ! Being considerate of others, understanding and supporting them in their efforts and challenges....something really special about that. Building trust and being honest goes hand in hand with coming across genuine, and making someone feel comfortable - they get what they see and others will quickly be responsive to you as a truly genuine individual....it's all about being authentic !

2.  Energy

Positive energy not only attracts positive people, it just draws them to you....has a tremendous effect on those in the same room with you....they want to be with you, they want to know about you, they want to be just like you.....your positive energy impacts others in ways you have no idea.....your positive energy inspires, motivates  and gets you through the worst of days.  I love being around people who have this effect on me and thrive from their positive attitude and energy.  Things don't always go as we would like, but when you take on a positive outlook, you are able to get through successfully and bring about the result you were looking for....if you are excited, others will be excited, if you are interested, others will be interested.....when you walk into that room, you want to bring that energy that will attract others just like you in your network of people !

3.  Passionate

Do you have that sparkle ?? How do you know ??  I am sure, you can walk into any room and you could probably pick out the passionate ones......it comes from within, and if you are passionate, you are truly motivated about what you do, there is no doubt about that - your level of enthusiasm and level of committment can be an incredible inspiration for others....you have to not only say, but you need to believe that....and if you believe that.....you are quite the inspiration !  You need to be the model on what you love to see from others....you cannot expect something you cannot deliver.  Passionate individuals drive their teams, their families, their communities, their friends, their networks to successful destinations you never thought would be possible......nothing more rewarding to accomplish than what you set out to do......I really believe you cannot teach someone to be motivated, but you sure can get them excited about goals and dreams !

4.  Driven

I don't know about you, but I have this zest for life and enjoy what I do....in whatever area or role you have -  you have to be really happy, and you have to be a go getter.  The beautiful thing about this is that you get others around you to join in - it's really contagious....there is nothing better than to have a great team around you and people you want to be and work with to plan and aim for the results you are looking for.  This can apply to the workplace, a voluntary organization and or any area of your life . If you are determined with a plan - you have the ability to take your purpose and make it meaningful to others. You are capable of bringing talented and motivated individuals together.... Your personality is one that people just love....who would not want to be around someone that is inspiring , motivating and has the ability to reach great heights of success !

 5.  Nurturing

We need to believe in others and what they are competent of....sometimes, they don't even know what they can do.....when you have that gift that you can see beyond what they can see - it is incredible.  We have gems amongst us and sometimes...all it takes is to invest some time in those that you believe in, help them find their way to greatness,  share what you see with them and what they don't see.  This exercise must be for me the greatest reward to see others personally succeed - and you can easily make that happen.  Believe in someone, guide them, & mentor them.  If you can recognize the importance of investing precious time and energy in others - they will grow and advance. They will find their success and become more than what they ever dreamed of !!!  You are an even bigger success in my eyes when you are happy of their successes - you are truly remarkable. Nothing better than to celebrate with those that are deserving !

Very special individuals come in different shapes and sizes, genders and cultures, but they all possess many of the same qualities I have highlighted....what are your favorite ones and who will you be reaching out to the next time you are in a room !!!

Try something new...

Have you ever been in a situation where you avoid doing things....just because you have a certain fear ?  Let's face it....the truth is, no one likes to challenge their comfort zones.  I am certain I am not the only one....and I am also certain I am not the only one either to find the strength to challenge yourself in whatever you put your mind to.

One of my biggest fears has been heights -  and throughout the years I learned that you have the strength to change it around. Every person has different thesholds of comfort level, and coming out of your comfort zone must probably be the scariest feeling.  I know it was for me, but I also know that in order to enjoy and live in the moment, I had to focus on enjoying what I was doing.   We can probably all set the example that we can do more than we thought we can....believing in ourselves is  probably our biggest motivator.  The greatest joy is to push and free yourself from the limitations you have set up for yourself.   My advice to you is not to be afraid to try something new.  All you need is some courage and motivation.

So, going back to one of my biggest fears. A few years back, we were in Paris, France. We were not going to be there for very long as we were just stopping by on our way home and all decided that we wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower.  You might know where I am going with this.....located on the Champ de Mars....the Eiffel Tower is one of the most well known structures in the world....it is 1050 feet in height  and was the tallest man made structure in the world until it was surpassed by the Chrysler building in New York.

Millions of people climb this magnificent building every year, and I wanted to be part of this statistic.
I remember, when we travelled with our friends to Las Vegas, we all decided to go up on the top of the replica - Eiffel Tower at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel ( I thought that was high) - with all the excitement - I forgot all about my fear of heights...until I realized we were taking a long time in the elevator to go up and suddenly felt a knot in my stomach.  This meant it was a long way up.  Let's just say - my back never left the back of the wall while we were up there !  Being in Paris, I owed it to myself to climb the tower and be rewarded with the stunning view of Paris. There was so much to see with all its monuments.  I just had to enjoy the experience.  There was many times while we were waiting to go up, that I had second doubts....and a few times.....I decided that I was not going up - it was just way too high up.  Ofcourse my family was not very helpful, since they said that if we were going to go up, we all had to go together.....although I would be  just fine waiting on the ground floor. That was not an option, so I decided, I was going to take baby steps - I was going to go up to the first two levels and then decide.  I tried that - it was not so bad. On the first floor, it was very relaxed, with so much to enjoy with the history of the Eiffel Tower and and the gallery to take in the buildings and monuments.  It had a circular view over Paris.  I was just amazed with all there was to see. I knew I wanted to see more, and this was just a tease. The glass lifts offered us a panaromic view of the tower on the way up - it was just stunning, being somewhat distracted with the experience, I made it to the second level and started to question myself if in fact I would be able to take the lift to the highest level. After taking some photos and just getting comfortable with the height we were at.....it was time for us to take the lift all the way up.....I was going to make this happen.....yikes !

I could not believe it - once we got up, it felt like I was in a plane with the view - only difference was we had the option to be in the open air or under the roof.  It was breathtaking.  What an amazing view of Paris....the scenery looked just like a painting. Using the panoramic maps all around the top of the tower, we were able to locate our position and get an idea of the directions and distances to major world cities - I was fascinated.  Wow...just imagine - I was able to explore the Eiffel Tower, something I wanted to do for a long time, something I would have never done if I did not come out of my comfort zone ! I am definitely going back to Paris for more !

So, the next time you want to try something new, don't hesitate, go for it....the reward is worth the experience.  The lesson I learned was that we can really do what we put our mind to !  No matter what age.  So be the example and push past your limits !   You will be pleasantly surprised.

Shout out to all moms - what you really want to know....

Moms are really superheros....if you have not figured that out by now......it's true.....they have many many roles and demands on a mom is overwhelming .....she is the driver, housekeeper, doctor, teacher, fashion designer, cook, event planner, homework buddy, school lunch mother, volunteer, clothes picker upper, friend, disciplinarian, taster, shopper, organizer, role model, banker, dog walker, cabano girl, gardener, support system....and the list goes on and on....In addition, Moms like to know everything.....that's the way it just is......you can't blame us ! As a mom raising boys.....loved, loved every minute.....so much fun and so much work..... I got to experience another side I never had any idea about...boys and sports ! wow what a combination. I also realized that each child is different and love their individuality, who they are and what makes them special.  Moms are very overprotective...did I say overprotective ?? just for the record -  all moms like to protect  our children - to keep them safe and help them understand the important and valuable lessons of life.

All moms want to navigate the school year with as much organization and success as possible....and have somewhat of a schedule or a plan.....it might not always work out, but at least, there is a plan of the week and everyone knows more or less what will be taking place.

Especially if you are a sport mom, your life just got superbusy tenfold, you spend lots of times in arena's, fields, and facilities where you are hanging out with lots of other moms.....we spend lots of time - talking about our kids and all the fun raising them, our day to day challenges and just the ordinary school day follow-up !What I have learned and observed is really simple -   all moms want to be in the know....all the time....Moms do a pretty good job to balance work life and family life - not easy, but totally devoted to raising their children when they have made that committment. And that means that they will go to great length to make it their business about their kids whereabouts.

So ever wonder.....what moms really mean when they are asking certain questions.......

here is a list I have put together.....over the years we establish our own dictionary of mom language....this would be a great time to take it out and dust it off....I am sure at the next dinner with my boys, we will probably talk about this list, have a few laughs....I look at it this way....memories are priceless, nothing makes me more proud than to have asked these questions and being a difficult mom.....I think in the end....my boys understood why i was asking them ! (and maybe secretly thanking me )

So back to this list and back to school - there are changes happening in every household this time of year... and ofcourse the questions you ask and want to know will have a different meaning for different ages. Summer is pretty much wrapping up.....moms get their children ready for back to school.....moms go back to work, teachers welcome their students with open arms......and moms go on mommy patrol all through the year.....to all moms out there and mommies to be and grandmas....there is a universal language between us. The role we play has an unbelieveable impact on our children....and one day, when they become parents, they will ask those same questions and really want to know exactly what we want to know now. We all play a key role for generations to come.....that is just the way it is - your every action to nurture, teach, appreciate, love and build your family will bring you years of beautiful memories.....so on this labor day , I salute all moms for your efforts and the next time you hear one of these questions....what are you really asking ??  I especially am thinking of my mom today and all her questions !!! love you mom and miss you !

here are my favorite questions.....and what I really want to know.....which one is your favorite.....share what you really want to know ? All moms need to stick together.....

Think Pink....Think Pink in the City....

Anyone who has ever been a part of coordinating fundraising events, you know first hand,  exactly how much work is involved.....and .you also know first hand how rewarding it is.  It means countless hours of working on the upcoming event, no sleep, talking pink in the city during our family dinners, dinning room converted to pink in the city headquarters, pink brain freeze moments and lots of heightened emotions when the tough gets going.....so why am I doing this again....remind me ??? Oh yes, there is no greater feeling then when that day comes.... and everything goes as planned....or maybe not....lol !  and the day you hand over that check.....what a proud moment...it takes away all the tiredness and  motivates you to do this again.  I know....I must be insane....but there is that something inside that drives me....care and compassion.  When your heart drives you...you can balance your life and make a non profit charity a part of your every day life.... that is my life and has been for the last 8 years.  Already August.....and starting to work on Pink in the City.....our Spring Charity Ball is booked for May 1, 2015...we are so excited and when I say we...this includes all of us on the pink in the city team who is family, friend, volunteer, supporter, sponsor and partner !  I  had  such a wonderful time with everyone making this past event a success....and really excited to make our upcoming one an even bigger success !

Who would have thought that Lawrence's simple request to fundraise 8 years ago for breast cancer would evolve into our Pink in the City success story. What began as a one time fundraising activity, has evolved into our family grassroots Pink in the City non profit charity organization to support a network of breast cancer survivors. To support members fighting,  to save lives, create better futures and model the way. Pink in the City has established  a community supported by so many volunteers, sponsors, friends, family and teachers that have been a huge support right from the get go. What has been really special and exceptionally touching....is when people reach out to me that I don't know, just simply wanting to support us. That truly is the most amazing feeling...and just reiterates to me that we have an entire community behind us, we are not in this alone.  Our supporters are  there, ready to assist in their special way, working together to increase survivorship and to make it better for those fighting the fight. With the help of our corporate partners, individual donors, school partners and interested supporters in our community, my family and I will continue to donate our time and energy to educate, support and care for the network of survivors that drive us to do what we do every single day. I am hoping that by the end of my post, if you were not one of our supporters....that you will have a change of heart and be !  Only you know how you can help us and if you are able to....I would love to hear from you !

Having an entire community by our side, supporting us in every way to make this annual event the best success ever is special and I would be lying if I said I was not touched and grateful. As a matter of fact, I get teary eyed and emotional every time our story comes up or someone talks to me about Pink in the City. You are probably wondering why ?? Well – I take it to heart and am very proud, proud to represent a story that we all created and proud of what we have accomplished. It is really incredible to see first hand individuals that care and genuinely want to help you. Yes, there are many compassionate individuals out there i have had the pleasure to be in touch with.  Working on this charity, I have also come across many interesting and fascinating individuals, who are generous and interested in being part of a unique team of individuals, passionate about Pink in the City.  What a combination....running a non profit charity is lots of hard work, and on your mind when you're sleeping.,,,but all worth it.

So, together with an incredible team of volunteers, we gave it our heart and soul to make our annual event the success it was. Seeing it evolve to what it has become is really something incredible.  This year we are already thinking.... how can we make this one bigger, how can we raise more money with this one. Our purpose is to give back and help create awareness and fundraise for breast cancer. Breast cancer touches so many women and men. We often hear only about women, but there are men as well that are touched by this dreadful disease. We were driven from all those that we knew and did not know that were impacted by breast cancer and that is what drives us today.  I am so grateful we have so much support.  We cannot do any of this alone and thanks to so many caring, selfless people out there that want to give their time and energy,  we are able to support our cause and make it a reality to help us support the many breast cancer patients out there that can benefit from all of our help. We cannot bring back those that have left us, but we can make a huge difference to those that are fighting.  Our 2014 Pink in the City organizing committee was out of this world - just thinking of the contributions each member brought to the team makes me real proud.

This year, we want to work with the schools to grow our "Model the Way" program. We are hoping the students will participate and become advocates for  Pink in the City  and what it represents.
Pink in The City is not just a charity to raise awareness for breast cancer, but one that inspires everyone to get involved and model the way for others, pay it forward. If we each contribute in our special way, we will be able to raise awareness and funds to support the acquisition of specialized medical equipment and that is something that every breast cancer survivor will thank you a million times over.

Pink in the City serves as ambassadors and encourage volunteer-active communities. Through our act of volunteerism and our message, we would  like to  empower students all across Canada that they can make a difference and create their own success stories just like Pink in the City. They play an important role in increasing volunteer participation and leadership within local schools and across canadian communities to promote "Model the way " program.
Pink in the City promotes young mentors and volunteerism in our schools to the next level and will award each participating school a Scholarship to recognize a young student that has displayed outstanding and exemplary leadership attributes in  the community.

If you want to join us,  there are many ways to lead by example and create/celebrate success stories, our aim of this program is for students to have fun, be creative and pick their own fundraising activity, which could consist of the following, but not limited to :

• Fundraising : Model the way bookmarks/donation 5.00

• Dress pink days/color your school pink,/pink sporting days

• Fashion show…..boys model the way

• Comedy for Pink

• Talent for Pink

• Track and Field for Pink

• Music show for Pink

• Sport days for Pink

• Sponsors to match funds raised for Pink in the City

• Raffles

I am hoping that you will give this program consideration to partner with us and create the next success story!  Everyone will have many months to fundraise and our aim is to pool in everyone's efforts on May 1, 2015 to celebrate our successes.  Our target for 2015 is $125,000.

As one of the founding members, you can understand this is dear to my heart and am reaching out to each of you to ask for your support and consideration.  To all companies headquartered in the region, branches of large corporations, local businesses, local sports teams, local schools and just simply ordinary citizens, please sponsor  Pink in the City or be a part of a school or workplace fundraising activity that will bring pink fun to any office or school.  Every time you share our page, you share awareness and share our story.

I want to personally Thank all of our participating sponsors for your contributions who made it possible for us to reach our target in 2014 and all of our loyal supporters.  Thank You for your support in the fight against breast cancer - you make a difference with each dollar donated.  Please visit our Pink in the City Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PinkInTheCityCanada?ref=hl    to stay connected and join us to paint our community Pink !
